Accessorizing Tips from a Minimalist
When I picked up Marie Kondo's Spark Joy, I was already in the middle of a living light journey. I was already knee deep in the process of re-evaluating my core values in a search for inner peace and happiness.
I've always considered myself to have a gypsy soul. I wanted to be able to fit all my belongs into one car so I could pack up and go wherever and whenever I wanted. This of course revolved around my re-evaluation of my possessions, questioning why I desired these things and eventually downsizing (easier said than done!)
Today I'm happy to say that after several years of process, I have achieved the "one car" belongings status.
The hardest part of downsizing my possessions? My closet.
Since fashion is a form of self-expression, I had a hard time believing that I could express my personality and values through what I wear, with a minimalist wardrobe. I even thought that *gasp* owning less would make my wardrobe boring.
But I was wrong.
You can have a minimalist wardrobe or capsule wardrobe and still show off your personality. Accessories in particular are perfect ways to change up an outfit - all while taking up a minimum amount of space (yay, one car goals!)
This week I've rounded up some of my favourite accessories and paired them with the 8-way to wear Evolve Top in the super-soft black Modal. Here are some of my favourite minimally styled looks.
THE BOATNECK
Tip: Try pairing a boatneck neckline with a long necklace for some creative drama.
I spend a lot of time on weekends taking it easy at home or running errands. My go-to pants are worn in ripped jeans paired with comfortable, flat shoes and a basic top. To break things up, I like to throw on a light necklace to add a more feminine touch.
THE COWL NECK
Tip: When wearing a cowl neck, try limiting your jewelry and accessories around your neck. A watch or simple bangle will add interest without stealing the show from the draped neckline.
I like to give off some classic vibes when I'm downtown in the city, or doing anything business related. It makes me feel professional - without the blazer and heels. A watch and clutch dresses up a simple 'jeans and tee' to something more polished.
THE OFF THE SHOULDER
Tip: Statement earrings and a off the shoulder top keep a look looking classy yet casual.
If I'm heading to the market or planning to spend time with a friend, I like to dress up a notch. Still comfortable and keeping things simple, but with an accent piece to create some interest. Statement earrings are a great addition to a basic outfit. They add a touch of sophistication and fun without taking over the outfit.
Paring down a wardrobe doesn't mean your personal style has to suffer. Thanks to a few well chosen accessories, The Evolve Top, and (not shown, my Chrysalis Cardi aka favourite scarf) I'm able to keep my closet small while still allowing my personality to shine.
